. . . Is marketing (still) sexist?

Brandsplaining is co-authored by Jane Cunningham and Philippa Roberts. Described by Penguin, their publishers, as a cross between Invisible Women and Ogilvy on Advertising.

Brandsplaining argues that while some aspects of marketing have moved away from old sexist tropes, often the same out of date ideas about women inform its narratives. In particular, it tackles the ‘sneaky sexism’ that is harder to spot, but continues to keep sexist ideas - about how women are, and how they should be - alive. The book then prescribes ten practical principles that brands can follow to ensure their marketing is at last, sexism free.

Brandsplaining will be released in Australia on the 1st of June

Philippa Roberts and Jane Cunningham


Philippa Roberts and Jane Cunningham began their careers working in advertising and communications agencies. They were both part of the leadership teams at DDB and then at Ogilvy as Client Services Director and Head of Planning.

They left the agency world to set up their own research company - PLH - with the specific intention of helping the marketing world better understand female audiences. In the years that have followed, they have spent almost every week enjoyably conducting research on behalf of a wide range of clients, exploring what women feel about themselves, and the businesses and brands that profess to serve them.

They have been described as 'the pioneers of marketing to women' and The Times has written of their work: "Jane Cunningham and Philippa Roberts argued that marketing departments need to work much harder at understanding women's motivations and decision-making systems. They won the argument. This is a crude generalisation, but not one, I think, with which most...will disagree. Creative briefs have radically changed to favour emotional intelligence and impact over rational, white-coated persuasion"

They are also the authors of three books on marketing to women - Inside Her Pretty Little Head, The Daring Book for Boys in Business and most recently Brandsplaining: why marketing is (still) sexist and how to fix it.
