Turbo Training - Plain language: writing more clearly for a better participant response
How can plain language improve research?
Do you write questionnaires for research projects or communicate with participants in other ways? Using plain language can help you.
Clear questions allow participants to easily understand what they are being asked. They simplify the interview experience and help the researcher by providing reliable, useful answers.
In this Turbo Training session, Jane Gregory and Susan Bell will offer ways in which plain language principles can help you optimise your survey questions and communications.
You will learn:
- What plain language is
- The key principles of plain language
- Tips on how to write questions that are clear and easily understood.
Jane is the Research Society Professional Standards Officer, responsible for the Society’s Code of Professional Behaviour and associated resources. Her focus is on standards in the profession with a view to ensuring the future. She has a particular interest in optimising participants’ experiences so they continue to participate.
Sue is the founder and lead researcher of Susan Bell Research. She conducts a range of research projects, qualitative and quantitative and has developed a special interest in testing written content. She has been a part of the plain language community for over 20 years, and is a member of the Association PLAIN.
